What is ACT?

ACT stands for Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, a behavioural therapy which is all about accepting what is out of our personal control and making a commitment to act on our values (what is most deeply important to us). The acronym ACT is very appropriate because the emphasis of this therapy is on taking action.
ACT is about building a life which is meaningful and fulfilling while accepting the pain which can inevitably occur. ACT offers a set of tools for dealing with difficult thoughts and feelings as well as help to clarify what is truly important to us.
ACT is based on a theory of human language and minds called Relational Frame Theory (RFT). Both ACT and the underlying RFT are supported by numerous published studies.
If you are interested in learning more about ACT then take a look at some of the books and websites in the resources page.
